What Is a Quad Muscle?

The human legs are made up of multiple muscle groups. According to the Mayo Clinic, the quad muscle (short for quadriceps) is the muscle the runs along the front of the thigh, and is the strongest muscle in the human body.
  1. Function

    • Quad muscles are necessary for extending the knee and flexing the hip. As such, people would not be able to walk, squat or run without quad muscles. Like all other muscles, quads can be strengthened through workout routines and maintaining an active lifestyle.

    Features

    • The quad muscle got its name because four muscles make up the quadriceps: Rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis and vastus intermedius. The vastus lateralis, vastus medialis and vastus intermedius muscles are knee extensors, which means they work to extend and straighten the knee. The rectus femoris is the muscle in charge of raising the leg and flexing the hip.

    Considerations

    • It is important to take care of the quad muscles by stretching and strengthening them. Since quad muscles are consistently used throughout the day, they have a tendency to get tight, making the leg stiff and difficult to move. The risk of tearing the quad muscle is higher when these muscles are severely tight.
