Prepare by ensuring that you have the proper gear for the trip. Trail running shoes and apparel should be rugged and designed to keep perspiration away from your body, and they should protect you from brush and insects. You should also carry a small backpack for carrying water, sunglasses, sunscreen and a snack for longer treks through the Santa Monica Mountains.

2
Visit the National Park Visitor Center in Thousand Oaks, California, to get a map of the Backbone Trail and plan your entry and exit points. You can also receive tips on the best trail running from the park rangers on the site. Maps include information about the specific trails, the location of bathrooms and where to find drinking water along the way.

3
Use the maps to note which portions of the Backbone Trail are open to mountain biking and dogs. Also observe which parts of the trails are more suitable for hiking than trail running. This will help you choose the trail that offers the best opportunities for trail runners.

4
Map out your trail before you go trail running on the Backbone Trail. Many of the checkpoints throughout the trail average anywhere from 5 to 8 miles, with the entire trail running nearly 70 miles through the Santa Monica Mountains in Southern California. While a few people do try to run the entire trail, it would take the better part of a week for even the most experienced trail runners.
