How to Begin Swimming for Exercise

Swimming is a form of exercise that works the entire body. Swimming for exercise raises cardio, which burns more calories, and it also tones the arms, back, core and legs. The book "Motivating People to Be Physically Active" recommends swimming as a way to be healthy and in shape. Water takes the weight off of the limbs of the body, which makes it easier to get more exercise with limited pain.

Make a plan to add swimming into an exercise routine by first getting the right gear and second finding a pool. Some cities have public pools, as do some apartment complexes. Swimming for fitness is best done in a pool rather than open water. The only gear needed is a swimsuit, and goggles are optional.

Doing the back stroke, for instance, can be a good workout for the shoulders and upper back area, according to "Motivating People to Be Physically Active."
