How to Lose Love Handles Fast for Men

Whether you're just starting to get in shape or you've been working at it for a while, you know that the love handles are one of the hardest areas to reduce fat. These annoying layers of fat bunched above the belt on either side can resist eradication when other areas of your body have been trimmed and toned. But there is hope for feeling your body's love by losing the love handles.

Reduce overall body fat. You won't get far by trying to do "spot reduction," meaning the removal of fat from a specific part of the body. Fat is lost evenly from your entire body through regular aerobic activity. In fact, focusing on trimming fat through rigorous aerobic exercise is more important for losing belly fat and love handles than abdominal strength training.

Build muscle. This includes muscles other than your abs and obliques (the muscles underneath your love handles). The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you will burn at rest. Stick to a regular routine of weightlifting and strengthening exercises.

Focus on your core, i.e., your abs and obliques. Do crunches, reverse crunches, leg lifts, hip lifts and side bends. Focus more on toning than building mass. If you have big oblique muscles, they may end up looking like love handles!

Maintain a healthy diet. Eat lean foods rich in protein and fiber, and cut out excess fried foods and simple sugars. If you're just starting to lose weight, you can cut out more carbohydrates if you want. However, if you're looking to lose those last 10 or 15 lbs., maintain a more realistic diet, one that includes some sources of carbohydrates.

Get adequate amounts of rest. Sleep for eight hours a night. Alternate workout days so that your muscles have enough time to heal themselves. Drink enough water (at least 3 liters a day, or about 3.2 qt.).
