How to Evaluate a Fitness Group Instructor

Whether you are taking a group fitness course for cardio exercises, aerobics, yoga, weight training or a combination of all four, your fitness experience can depend on the instructor. Many factors determine the qualification and validity of the instructor, such as preparation of the course, teaching methodology, instructor personality and more. If you have joined a fitness group at a gym, evaluation forms are available at the front desk for you to assess your instructor.

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate the instructor's personality and preparedness. Notice how the instructor makes use of your group session time, how he conducts himself professionally, if he shows enthusiasm during the session and his knowledge and expertise of the routine. Assess if the class starts and finishes on time and that the instructor is open to questions before, during and after each routine.

    • 2

Take notice about the way your fitness group instructor sets up the class curriculum. Evaluate all aspects of your session from warm-up and aerobic exercises to strength training and cool-down. Assess if the level of difficulty is appropriate for your class. If you class is labeled "beginner," ask yourself if the course fits anyone at the beginner level.

    • 3

Assess the instructor's choreography. Notice if the instructor is mixing the right variety of movements to work out all the muscles the session is designed to help with. The instructions should be clear and easy to follow and the instructor should warn of any dangers and safety reminders before executing the exercise routine.
