How to Set Goals in Personal Training

Having fitness goals is important when you are working with a personal trainer because it gives the trainer an idea of what you are trying to accomplish. This, in turn, helps you achieve your desired shape in a timely matter. Having a great support system is also important when you are setting goals because it encourages you to stay on track and it gives people that you trust a chance to involve themselves in your commitment.

Instructions

Find a picture of a person that has the body form or energy level similar to what you are trying to achieve. Giving the personal trainer a picture will help him understand what your exact goals are, which will allow him to create a more effective workout plan.

Make your goals as clear as possible. For example, if your goal is to lose weight, include a total of how much weight you are trying to lose and the length of time in which you want to achieve the weight loss. An example of a clear goal is: "My goal is to lose 30 pounds in three months." Also, separate your goals into long- and short-term commitments. For example, a short-term goal is to make your jeans fit better, while a long-term goal is to lose two inches on your waistline in eight weeks.

Take into consideration any obstacles that may hinder you from completing your goals. Setting goals that do not correspond to your lifestyle are not effective. For example, if you want to lose 10 pounds in one month and your workout plan includes three hours of daily intensive exercise, then your daily schedule must have an adequate amount of free time available. Therefore, set goals that are more coherent to your schedule.

Write down your goals. Writing down goals can give you and your trainer a clearer picture of what you want to accomplish. Attaching the written goals on an item such as the refrigerator or front door is also helpful because they remind you about your task on a day-to-day basis.
