1
Research the reputation of different training organizations. The National Strength and Conditioning Association, or NSCA, and the American College of Sports Medicine, or ACSM, are well-respected organizations and their certifications are recognized by most potential employers. The National Academy of Sports Medicine, or NASM, and the American Council on Exercise, ACE, also are widely recognized.

2
Contact the gym or fitness center you would like to work for and ask what certifications it requires. Some gyms may recognize a large variety of personal trainer certifications, but others may accept only a select few. If you plan on working independently, talk to other personal trainers or potential clients about preferred certifications.
-
3
Find out what workshops are available in your area and decide how far you would be willing to travel. Most training workshops only last for 2 or 3 days, but the vast majority are held in major cities. Additional travel may be required to take the certification exam. Workshop and testing locations for individual programs can found on the Internet.

4
Look into the requirements and prerequisites for different programs. A minimum age of 18, a high school diploma or GED and a current CPR certification are necessary for almost all personal training certifications. The NSCA has a program for certified strength and conditioning specialists that requires a four-year college degree.
-
5
Invest your money and time in getting the certification after careful consideration. Decide how much money you are willing to invest. Certification programs can range in price from $65 to more than $6,000, but it is important to consider the program reputation and how frequently you will need to be re-certified. The price of materials and exam fees may not be included in the program cost, so add those to the overall program cost. Factor in the price of any prerequisites you need to complete and travel expenses for attending workshops or taking the exam.
