How to Look Down While Maintaining Good Posture

Sitting at computers, stooping to clean dishes and many daily activities force you into uncomfortable and stationary positions, causing you to slouch or strain your neck and back. It is easy to slip into a habit of bad posture, according to the University of Illinois McKinley Health Center, especially when you are tired or concentrating hard. With practice, however, it is possible to carry out these common activities in a way that won't harm your body in the long term.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit or stand with both feet firmly planted on the ground, about hip-width apart.

    • 2

Lengthen your spine. It may help to imagine a string tugging from the top of your head and the bottom of your tail bone, stretching you in both directions. Imagery exercises can help you to practice good posture habits.

    • 3

Tuck in your chin so the curve in the back of your neck straightens. Your spine should be lined up from head to tail bone. If you are sitting, and have trouble keeping your lower back straight, you may want to use a back pillow for support.

    • 4

Look down slowly and comfortably, tucking in your chin a bit more to keep the alignment of the spine.
