How to Sew a Yoga Mat Bag

Sewing a bag for your yoga mat will keep the mat clean and protected between your yoga classes. This bag is simple in design, with a tube-like bag for the mat itself, a drawstring to keep the bag closed and a strap to carry your bag.   • Measuring tape

      Roll up your mat and measure the length and circumference of the mat. Add 3 inches to the circumference measurement and the rectangle measurements. Add an additional 3 inches to the length of the rectangle for the drawstring part of the bag. Cut out the rectangle of fabric according to measurements.

      Use a compass to measure a circle on the fabric that is the length of your circumference. Add 2 inches to the circle for seam allowance. Measure the rectangle of fabric and cut the circle out of the fabric according to your measurements.

      Fold one of the shorter ends on the rectangle of fabric twice and iron the fabric to keep the seam in place. Fold the fabric from the top to form a loop big enough for the drawstring cord. Sew the folded edge to the fabric.

      Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise with the back of the fabric facing out. Sew the two edges together, forming a tube for your yoga mat. Leave space at the top for the drawstring to go in the small loop at the top. Sew the edges of the circle to the bottom edge of the fabric tube, opposite the side with the drawstring.

      Flip the tube bag inside out so the front of the fabric is facing out. Check the seams to ensure they are tight. Cut a piece of ribbon a few inches longer than the bag and sew the ends to the top and bottom of the bag. Weave the cord through the loop on top to create the drawstring. Put your yoga mat inside the bag to make sure it fits. Tie the drawstring ends to keep your yoga mat secure.
