Remember, you'll start as a Kub or a pupil in Hapkido. The color of your belt changes depending on what degree Kub you are. There are different degrees and belt colors of Kubs depending on how much you know. In general, it goes from white to yellow to blue to red. Some schools will use strips to indicate the different degrees.

Become a Dan when you get your black belt. Like with Kubs, there are many different degrees of Dans, but only one color of belt.

Talk to your instructor. Some Hapkido schools will make you do an essay on a specific topic related to Hapkido before you can get your black belt. In addition, each school will have different requirements for what physical things you need to do to get your black belt.

Be ready to be an advanced student of Hapkido. In general, you'll have to be able to do defense against wrist grabs, defense against kicks, self-defense against choke holds, self-defense against knife attacks, Ji Pang E Sul (Cane Techniques) and other things. You'll have to go through a test of some form to prove to your instructors you're expert in these techniques.
