How to Fold a Judo Gi

A judo gi (uniform) consists of a kimono-type jacket, a loose-fitting pair of pants and a belt. It is made of thick canvas designed to endure the grappling, twisting and pulling that is part of judo training. This useful procedure for folding your judo gi helps maintain its quality and makes it easy to carry to your dojo (training hall) or to tournament venues.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your jacket out flat with its back down and the sleeves extended sideways.

    • 2

      Open the jacket lapels.

    • 3

Fold your pant legs together, and then fold the pants in half as if they were about to be stored on a hanger.

    • 4

Place your folded pants inside your gi jacket and close the lapels.

    • 5

      Fold both jacket sleeves inward.

    • 6

Fold the shoulders of the jacket inward toward each other.

    • 7

Roll up the jacket from the bottom to the top.

    • 8

Tie your belt around the rolled-up judo gi. This holds the gi closed and provides you with a handle with which to carry it.
