How to Do Judo Take-downs

Judo is one of many martial arts derived from Jujutsu, a self-defense form of fighting that originated with the warrior classes of feudal Japan. Physically demanding, Judo doesn't use kicks, punches or chopping moves. The underlying strategy is using your opponent's force against himself through minimal effort of your own.       Warm-up before any practice session or competition with stretching exercises. Pay particular attention to warming up the back muscles and joints to keep from straining yourself.

      Stand facing your opponent and grab hold of the collar of his gi. Center your weight on your right foot and step with the left to the outside of your opponent with enough distance to swing your right leg past his hip.

      Tuck your right elbow into his chest. Your left elbow tucks into your own ribs. Shift weight onto your left foot and sweep your right leg behind your opponent's knee.

      Break his balance with a push forward against his chest with your shoulder while your hooked right foot pulls his leg out of position. Maintain your hold on his gi to the floor and assume a dominant position and finish out the Judo take-down.
