How to Do a Hip Throw in Judo

The Hip Throw is an intro judo technique known as a Breakfall and involves one fighter throwing the other off balance over his hip and the other fighter flipping and landing the fall. Although this is an intro technique, it involves both fighters knowing the basics of judo and the opponent who is being thrown needs to know how to fall safely.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare for the technique by getting into a basic judo fighting stance. The Hip Throw works best on someone taller and slower than yourself, but you should practice it with people of a variety of statures.

    • 2

Step forward with your right foot, placing it between your opponent's feet. The Hip Throw is most effective and easiest to execute if your opponent is already moving and has just stepped forward with his right foot, but practice the technique slowly before trying it in motion.

    • 3

Rotate your body to the right so that your back is to your opponent and your hip is in front of his right side.

    • 4

Reach your right arm around his back and waist. Grab his right arm with your left arm across your body.

    • 5

Pull your opponent down and to your right, while simultaneously reaching under his body with your hip and then pushing up into him to get his body up and over your hip. This may take some time to perfect, especially since intro judo practitioners may not be used to using their hips.

Guide your partner in falling over your hip and thigh. Let go of your opponent as he moves through the fall.
