How to Do a Kizami Zuki

The kizami zuki is one of the most basic strikes in the martial art of Karate. It is actually nothing more than a light jab punch thrown from the leading side. However, don't be fooled by its simplicity. As something of a "teaser" punch, the kizami zuki serves many purposes. It can be used to gauge the distance between you and your opponent, distract his attention away from your true attack or it can be used to lead the way for a follow-up combination.

Instructions

    • 1

Assume a fighting stance with your weaker side facing your target. If you are right-handed, your left side should face your target. If you are left-handed, do the reverse.

    • 2

Bring your arms up to fighting position. Your front elbow should be about a fist's distance away from your torso and your front forearm should be at a 45 degree angle to your chest.

    • 3

Position your front fist so that it is in line with your front shoulder.

    • 4

Snap your fist outward into a punch. Don't lead with your shoulder as you would in boxing. Begin the punch from the elbow so that your opponent cannot see the movement coming.

    • 5

Rotate your forearm and fist inward towards your central line as you punch. By the time you reach the target, you want your fist to be horizontal, not vertical. You will strike with the knuckles of your index and middle fingers.
