Jodan Uke

When you begin studying goju-ryu, one of the first techniques you learn is the jodan uke. This technique is commonly referred to as a high or upper block. The jodan uke is used to block a strike coming toward your head. To perform this technique, raise your arm in a 45-degree angle above your head. The outside edge of your forearm defends against the oncoming attack. Powerfully twist your palm and inner forearm outward as you raise your arm across your face. This motion should deflect a strike. Make a tight fist and exhale as you lock your high block into position.
Gedan Uke

Another basic block in goju-ryu is the gedan uke, or low block. This technique is typically used to block a kick that targets your midsection. Begin this technique by raising your fist in front of your forehead. Your palm should be facing your head. Block a kick by thrusting your outer forearm downward and then outward. The kick should be deflected to the side of your body. Keep your opposite fist at your side in a ready position. This fist should be prepared to deliver a strong punch as a counterattack.
Chudan Tsuki

If you have ever attended a karate class, you have likely seen students repetitively practicing middle punches. This is a common technique in several styles of martial arts. Goju-ryu refers to this punch as chudan tsuki. Start this technique by placing your left fist on the left side of your body with your palm facing upward. Your fist should be a few inches below your armpit. Quickly turn your fist clockwise as you punch your opponent in the solar plexus. Hit your target with the knuckles of your forefinger and middle finger. To avoid injuring yourself, keep your wrist straight while punching.
Shomen Geri

According to Goju Ryu Australia Karate Do, a karate club, this front kick was created as a "combat-effective kick with no sports orientation." Perform this kick by using the ball of your foot to hit an attacker in the belly button area. Simultaneously kick the attacker in the groin with the heel of your foot. Other martial arts styles have their own adaptations of the front kick.
