Northern Shaolin Techniques

Northern Shaolin is a martial art that focuses on the "external" as opposed to the "internal" aspects of martial arts. It is thus focused primarily on actual techniques and fighting methods. Shaolin developed around the 7th century and is considered the greatest Chinese martial art. There are certain techniques to Shaolin that are fundamental and absolutely necessary to master if you want to progress in this ancient fighting system.
  1. Horse Stance

    • The horse stance is the fundamental starting position in Northern Shaolin. This move is carried out by simply positioning your feet just past shoulder width apart. Then bend your knees so that you are in effect sitting in this position. The reason for adopting this position at the start of any fight is to give your body a low center of gravity and thus make it harder for you to be knocked over.

    Center Punch

    • The center punch is probably the most basic punching technique you are taught in Northern Shaolin kung fu. Adopt the horse stance and bend your elbows so that your forearms are at a 90-degree angle to your body and your wrists are pointing upward. With your right fist first, punch toward your opponent, twisting your forearm so that your wrists are pointing downward on impact. This "drilling" motion is meant to increase the level of impact on your opponent. Alternate these punches between your right and left arm.

    Stiletto Kick

    • This kick is a simple kick to your opponent's shin. Though simple, it is one of the first kicks taught, as it is easy to learn and effective in a fight. The reason this kick is effective is that the shinbone is very sensitive and a direct kick will cause pain and distract your opponent.

    Stomp Kick

    • A stomp kick is delivered by balancing on one foot while raising the knee of the other leg to about waist height. The raised leg is then extended quickly and forcefully in the direction of your opponent. This type of kick is good for pushing an opponent back rather than causing serious damage. This type of kick can, however, be delivered to sensitive areas such as the groin or knee, in which case they can cause serious damage to your opponent.

    Inside Forearm Block

    • This move is a fundamental Northern Shaolin protective move. It is used to protect mainly the head and face from attack. Hold your forearm and upper arm at a 90-degree angle and tense the muscle so that your arm is firm. Have your training partner slowly punch toward your face. Sweep your arm across your face so that your forearm sweeps your training partner's fist away from your face. When doing this, make sure the palm of your hand is facing your face.
