One-Hand Sword Fighting Techniques
-
Snap
-
The snap technique is used when you are attacking from the ready position, which is with your feet shoulder-width apart. You must hold the handle of the sword across the back of your neck with one hand, with your elbow raised to the level of your shoulder. The snap starts with a swinging motion as you lower your elbow and bring the sword around in a 90-degree angle to the ground. As you swing the sword, take a step forward with the leg on the side you are swinging from. Your arm should be fully extended when you strike and immediately pull back so you are ready for additional attack or defense.
Drop Swing
-
Starting with your sword facing the ground behind you at a 45-degree angle, with the handle against the back of your neck, swing the sword into the air so that the tip is over your head and facing your target. This will require a flexible wrist. Take a step forward with the leg that is opposite to the side you are swinging from. You will then snap your wrist back while dropping the shoulder that is holding the sword, swinging the sword's tip around in a circle. Twist your body so that your sword arm is closer to your target and strike.
Overhead Return
-
The overhead return is a move that is best completed after your opponent strikes your sword from its outside when you are holding it directly in front of you. Use the momentum of the strike to swing your sword in a 90-degree angle over your head and lunge at your opponent while your sword is still swinging. This move requires strong abdominal muscles, as most of the momentum will come from your waist area.
Whip
-
To attack your opponent when he is in close range, you can grab him either in a headlock or by his shirt with one hand. Swing the sword from over your head and whip it in his back. The whip is sometimes the most efficient technique when you have a long sword and you are in close quarters. It can catch your enemy off guard. You can then proceed to stab him by pulling the sword back and plunging it into his torso.
