How to Do a Spinning Roundhouse

The spinning roundhouse kick is a useful move to learn when training in martial arts. A spinning roundhouse kick adds a quick spin and jump to the traditional roundhouse kick move, adding power and force from the spinning motion. Adding more power comes with some disadvantages: You momentarily break eye contact with your opponent, for example, and the move takes additional time during which your opponent can dodge or counterattack. Because of the spin's power, it's easy to land out of position when you miss. Choosing the right moment to use a spinning roundhouse kick can cause devastating damage to your opponent.

Instructions

    • 1

Position yourself in a front stance with your opponent in front of you, your right leg back, knees slightly bent, eyes forward and hands up to protect your head.

    • 2

Lift your left foot, step forward, bring your right leg forward and begin to turn toward your left side. Look carefully where your opponent is positioned, as you will lose sight of him for a split second during your spin. Keep your hands up for defense, resisting the temptation to drop your hands as you spin.

    • 3

Raise your left foot, and spin 360 degrees off your right foot. When your left foot has spun around and is facing the opponent, jump off your right foot toward the enemy, rotate your hips forward and strike at the opponent's head or chest. With experience, you will improve at predicting your opponent's movements and altering your kicking angles to make contact. Take care to spin quickly to reduce the time your opponent has to block, evade or counterattack.
