How to Build Your Own Karate Taekwondo Belt Rack

Taekwonko is a form of martial arts that specializes in self-defense. It is a popular choice for parents of young children looking to offer their child an avenue to learn self confidence and defense. Levels in Taekwondo are denoted by the color of belt that the practitioner wears. A belt display holds the belts that a practitioner has been awarded to proudly show off the progression through the art.

      Cut nine pieces of plywood, 18 inches wide by 3 inches tall.

      Drill four 1/4-inch holes in each piece of plywood except for one, with two holes along each 18-inch side of the plank, 2 inches in from each 3-inch side. For the final piece, only drill a pair of holes in one 18-inch side, as it is the bottom plank and will not need to hang another plank beneath it.

      Spray eight pieces of plywood with the colors of the Taekwonko belt system, with one blank for each color. Belts proceed as white, yellow, orange, green, blue or purple, brown, red and black. Speak with your instructor to determine if your school uses blue or purple.

      Paint the remaining piece of plywood as a top nameplate for the rack. Including the name of the student and the name or logo of the dojo are great design ideas for the top plate.

      Secure a pair of elastic bands to each of the eight belt planks, securing one band 3 inches in from each 3-inch side with hot glue along the back of the planks.

      Tie the white belt plank to the bottom of the name plank with yarn so that it hangs approximately 1/2-inch below the name plate.

      Tie the remaining belt planks to the belt rank that precedes it.

      Cut a piece of twine 18 inches long and tie each end to the remaining holes in the name plate. As the holes are only 14 inches apart, the rope will have slack, allowing the rack to be hung from a nail or wall hanger by the yarn.

      Secure a belt to the rack by folding it so that it is 18 inches wide and inserting it under the straps on the matching plank.
