How to Earn a Wing Chun Black Belt

Wing Chun is an ancient Chinese martial art, a practical form of self defense as opposed to the showier, high-flying techniques you may have seen in most martial arts movies. Finding a Wing Chun school in your area may be the most difficult step of all toward getting your black belt.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a Wing Chun school that suits you. If you're focused on having a black belt, you may have to turn some otherwise excellent schools down; not all martial arts schools use the belt system for ranking.

    • 2

Study the Wing Chun techniques diligently. The only way to get really good at them is to practice frequently. You won't get a black belt if you can't perform your Wing Chun techniques to a high standard.

    • 3

Complete rank tests as your school offers them. This requires a lot of study, dedication and practice. You may need to retake a test every so often; this is a natural part of the process and well worth it to get your black belt.

    • 4

Keep in close contact with your instructor. Make sure he knows you're focused on getting your Wing Chun black belt, and do everything he asks of you to meet that goal. He will test you by giving you extra responsibilities, like teaching Wing Chun techniques to beginners and watching how you do.

    • 5

Be patient. You're well on your way to earning that black belt, or the equivalent rank if you've stumbled into a Wing Chun school with a different system.
