How to Line Up a Slice Shot in Pool

Hitting slice shots consistently will open up a new realm of possibilities in your pool game. Also known as a cut or an angle shot, the slice is effective in less-than-optimal situations where the cue ball doesn't line up with the target ball and the pocket. A slice shot will impact the target ball at an angle, sending it on a straight path toward its destination. It takes an active imagination to determine the slice's angles, but a proper set up is crucial to making the shot.

      Find the contact point on the target ball. In your imagination, draw a direct line from the pocket to the opposite side of the ball. This spot is where the cue ball must contact to produce a successful shot.

      Draw another imaginary line from the contact point through the middle of the cue ball. Position your cue tip at the spot where the aim line emerges from the cue ball.

      Level your cue stick along the aim line emerging from the cue ball. Focus on the cue ball as you take a few practice strokes. Keep your body still; the only motion should come from your rear arm. Take the shot when you're ready, impacting the cue ball along the aim line.
