How to Set Up Pool Table Rails

A pool table can last for many years if it is properly maintained. Over time, the rubber rails dry out and become less responsive. The billiard balls will no longer bounce off the rail the way they should, which makes bank shots almost impossible. Follow these steps to set up new rails and improve the play of your pool table.

Sand down the inside edge of the pool table's railing so you have a smooth surface where you will be attaching the rails. This is especially important if you are replacing an existing set of rails because there may be glue residue left on the table.

Smooth down the inside of each rail edge that will be attached to the table. To locate this inside edge, lay the rails on the table so that the curved edge is on top.

    • 3

Apply a light coating of adhesive to the inside edge of the rail and press it against the railing of the pool table. Make sure the rail sits flat against the table and there are no wrinkles or lumps. It should also be flush along the top of the pool table. Repeat this step until all four rails have been affixed to the table. Let the adhesive try overnight before proceeding to the next step.

Trim the any excess rubber at the end of each rail with a utility knife. The ends should sit flush against the pool table's pockets. Apply adhesive to the facings and attach them to the ends of the rails. Allow the adhesive to dry overnight, then trim off any excess rubber with the utility knife.
