What Is Tournament Pool Play?
-
Significance
-
Tournament pool play is a competition where a large number of players enter a contest to determine the best pool player. To win in tournament pool, a player does not have to defeat everyone in the tournament. Instead, the player just needs to beats the opponents that he plays in one-on-one games of pool. There are even different types of tournament pool play in which a player can lose once and still win the tournament such as a double-elimination tournament.
Types
-
Tournament pool play has many different variations. There are some pool tournaments in which players will start out in small groups at a table with either the one or two players with the best win-loss record at that table advancing into a single-elimination tournament. Some pool tournaments allow you to lose twice before being eliminated; after one loss you go into a portion of the tournament bracket where you play other players who have one loss as well. There also are traditional pool tournaments where if you lose one time, you are eliminated from the tournament.
Features
-
Pool tournaments will be organized at a pool hall. Sometimes these tournaments are organized by the pool hall itself, and other times by a sponsor. Each tournament has specific house rules that you must follow during the tournament. Some of these rules can penalize you for slow play, accidental movements of the cue ball, or foul language at the table. Pool tournaments will either issue a written copy of these rules or hold a meeting before the tournament begins so each player is aware of the rules.
Considerations
-
When playing in a pool tournament, there are a few standard practices you should follow. Make sure that you pay attention to the game and are ready to take your shot when it is your turn. You should always address your competition in a polite manner when at the table. If you have a question about a rule in the pool tournament, ask a tournament official the question before you act instead of arguing after you are declared to be in violation of the rules. If food and drink are permitted to be served during the tournament, keep them away from the table itself.
Warning
-
The days where players could win pool tournaments by cheating and intimidating their opponents are gone. Instead pool is considered to be a gentleman's game. This means if you are abusive to your opponent, the pool tournament officials or any spectators, you risk being kicked out of the tournament or assessed a penalty by the tournament officials.
