How to Buy a Windsurfing Board

Windsurfing is a cross between surfing and sailing where you stand on a board while holding onto a boom attached to a sail. It is a sport men, women and even kids can do. Once you have tried windsurfing, determine you like it and it is a sport you want to continue, it's time to buy your own board.

Decide what type of windsurfing you want to do. Free riding is your entry-level basic windsurfing, racing tests your skills against other windsurfers, freestyle involves pushing the limits and learning how to do tricks and wave sailing is for intermediate and advanced riders ready to tackle the ocean and its waves. Choose a smaller board for freestyle, racing and wave sailing and stick to a longer board for basic free riding.

Know the conditions where you do most of your windsurfing. Generally, smaller boards are better in strong winds while bigger boards work better in calmer areas.

Be realistic about your skill level. Shorter boards are better suited for more advanced riders while longer boards are great for beginners. But also consider your body weight. If you are not a beginner but have a heavy body weight, you may need to go with a longer board.

Shop off-season for windsurfing boards. At the end of summer, for example, many stores will have sales to get rid of their water merchandise. Also, pay attention when the new models become available. Many stores heavily discount the older models to get rid of them to make way for new models.
