Pontoon Boat Safety

Life Vests
-
Because pontoon boats can carry many more passengers than other boats of similar lengths, they have become popular choices for partying and fishing. Even though these boats tend to move a bit slower than their jet boat counterparts, your passengers still need to be aware of what to do in case of an emergency. With that said, there needs to be at least one life vest available to each pontoon boat passenger. Regardless of each person's ability to swim, it is very important that everyone aboard have his or her own life vest.
Driving Around Other Boats
-
Pontoon boats may come with a variety of engine options, but these types of water vehicles are generally slower than other models. It is important to know exactly how to operate the pontoon boat when other boats are nearby, as the wrong move could become disastrous. As another boat approaches you from the front, keep this vehicle on the left-hand side of the pontoon. Similar to American driving rules, this minimizes any confusion about who has the right to travel in a particular area. If another boat is passing you from the side, make sure your boat hits the wake appropriately. Cut the boat into the wake so that the front hits at a diagonal angle, eventually rocking the boat side to side.
Protecting Pontoons
-
No matter how fast or slow you are driving through the water, make sure you are completely aware of what is underneath and around you. Pontoons are built to withstand harsh conditions and mild impacts, but you will want to avoid shallow waters or collisions with heavy objects. Monitor your boat's surroundings, especially if you hear the pontoon scraping any obstructions along the way. If possible, install an electronic depth monitoring device to provide you precise details of the water's conditions.
Docking and Beaching
-
When you are done with your pontoon boat, at least for a short period of time, make sure that it is properly secured so that it does not float away. Pull as close to the dock as you can, then have someone step onto this platform to help you tie off. Use sturdy rope and tie knots at each corner of the boat. Drop an anchor if you have beached your boat.
