Ideas for Restoring a 1979 Galaxie Ski Boat Interior

Just as some people dedicate themselves to restoring old cars, old barns and old motorcycles, some boaters enjoy restoring older-model boats to their former glory. The Galaxy Boat Company started operations in 1978 and made the same models in 1979, meaning the 1979 models are among Galaxy's original series.
  1. Total Restoration

    • If you are going to the expense and effort of restoring a Galaxy or other model of boat, do a total restoration. At first glance, you may think simply recovering the seats, replacing the floor carpeting and attending to obviously broken items will bring the boat to its former glory, but chances are that on a boat this old, there will be hidden things that need attention. Check the wooden deck, the transom and other parts of the boat for dry rot, mold, hidden corrosion or other damage, and be prepared to restore these foundations before tackling the obvious cosmetic rehabilitation.

    Factory or Custom

    • Some restorers insist on restoring a vintage boat exactly as it came from the manufacturer. They insist on using the same materials in the same colors for interior seats, carpeting and other accouterments. Broken or missing items may be salvaged from other boats or custom built with the same materials and look identical to the original equipment. Other restorers use their old boat as a starting point, then install custom seats, flooring, sound systems and other equipment to customize their "old" boat and upgrade it with a more modern look and amenities.

    Added Safety Features

    • Use the restoration project as an opportunity to install additional and more-modern safety features. When replacing or restoring the floor, consider adding additional floatation foam. Upgrade the running lights to modern LED fixtures. Upgrade the electrical system from non-fused or old-fashioned, in-line fuses to a modern, marine system with circuit breakers and marine-grade wiring. These upgrades can be made without compromising the retro look of your project.

    Mechanical Upgrades

    • All 1979 Galaxy models featured inboard-outboard propulsion, and if the original motor and outdrive were properly maintained, they'll still work. But I/O technology has changed over the years and gotten better. Consider upgrading your boat with a new motor and stern-drive unit. Electronic ignition, fuel injection and other modern technology will ensure quicker starts, better performance, increased fuel economy and lower emissions. Convert your steering system to hydraulic steering for better boat control. These upgrades won't affect the look, but will enhance the performance.
