How to Apply Polyflake Gelcoat

Polyflake gelcoat is different than other gelcoats in that it contains small flecks that sparkle in the sun and with the reflection of the water. This type of fiberglass resin is used mainly on boats designed for catching bass. The sparkles are said to help attract the fish. Applying polyflake gelcoat involves skill and patience along with the correct materials and proper safety gear. This is something that someone can do as an amateur by having all of the proper elements in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a respirator over your face. Run a sanding block over the surface of the boat to be coated using coarse sandpaper. Follow that with the same procedure using fine sandpaper. Ensure that the surface to be coated is smooth and free of inconsistencies.

    • 2

Remove any residual dust and grease from the boat using a cloth soaked in acetone.

    • 3

Follow the instructions included with your gelcoat and gelcoat gun in regard to the amount of coating and hardener to be used. Fill the gun with the correct amount of gelcoat and hardener. Mix the gelcoat with an electric drill and a mixing attachment until it is completely mixed evenly and free of streaks.

    • 4

Apply a heavy mist of gelcoat evenly and consistently to the surface of the boat. Apply a second coat of heavy mist when the first coat is tacky to the touch. Allow the gelcoat to cure until it is hard and cool to the touch.

    • 5

Coat the surface of the boat with boat wax. Apply two coats of wax for the best results.

    • 6

Buff the wax with a soft cloth until you achieve the desired amount of shine.
