How to Troubleshoot Teleflex Marine
Instructions

1
Search for blockage in the line of tubing between the helm and cylinder if the helm jams up while filling the steering system with hydraulic fluid. Make sure the tubing has not collapsed and check all fittings for incomplete holes. If the tubing has collapsed, you must remove it and apply a new segment with the tube connectors.
-
2
Inspect the cylinder to make sure that it has been mounted properly if you are encountering resistance when attempting to fill it with hydraulic fluid. Air may be trapped inside the cylinder. Re-mount the cylinder in accordance with the directions provided by the manufacturer if this is the case.
-
3
Detach the cylinder from the tiller arm and turn the steering wheel if you are having difficulty steering the boat. If the steering wheel turns more easily, the rudder post is bent or the rudder post glands are too tight. Loosen the glands or replace the rudder post according to the directions provided by the manufacturer. Make sure that the proper fluid has been used if disconnecting the cylinder does not fix the problem. Using the wrong fluid or allowing air to enter the system will require draining it and refilling with the fluid suggested by the manufacturer.
-
4
Contact an authorized Teleflex repair shop if the helm unit lurches continually. Dirt may be in the inlet check of the helm pump and the pump itself must be replaced. Call the shop if the rudder drifts to port without the wheel being turned. This is a sign of dirt in the check valves and also requires the helm pump to be replaced.
-
5
Examine the size of the steering wheel and cylinders of the boat if steering the vessel is easy while it is docked, but you encounter difficulty steering when in open water. Replace with a larger steering wheel and or cylinders according to the specifications provided by the manufacturer.
-
6
Speak with your local boat builder or naval architect about a vibration cure if you notice that the rod end ball and or mounting foot are wearing down faster sooner than expected. This is a sign of excess vibration at the rudder.
