The Outboard Remote Conversion of a 1996 Yamaha 15 HP

When you decide that you are tired of sitting in the back of the boat, you can install a remote control for the throttle and shifter on the Yamaha 15-horsepower outboard. You may then move forward and join your guests. The move forward also makes it easier to load the boat for a level ride. When you operate the motor using the tiller controls, you no longer need to compensate for both the 74-pound outboard and your own weight.

    • 2

Mount the remote control box on your boat. Plug the tachometer lead into the forward end of the control housing.

    • 3

Plug the remote control wiring harness from the trim and tilt the hydraulic motor into the control box. Route the wiring harness and the shift and throttle cables down the side of the boat. Secure the harness in place, using plastic ties placed 3 feet apart.

Shift the remote handle into "Neutral." Move to the engine.

    • 5

Measure the gap between the barrel holder and mounting pin, using a machinist's rule. Push the cable in until it first becomes difficult to push. Set the cable barrel into the lowest opening in the holder. Lock the cable to the mounting pin, using the retainer lock nut.

    • 6

Connect the throttle cable to the remote control's throttle lever, then secure with the retainer nut.

    • 7

Move the throttle to shift the outboard's gears and and check the throttle adjustment. Insert the cable barrel into the barrel holder and lock it in place, using the cable latch.
