How to Put On a New Bodyboard Leash

Invented only 40 years ago by surfing legend Tom Morey, body boarding has grown into an international sport and past-time. Easier to learn than surfing, because you lie down instead of standing on a board, body boards or "boogie boards" now ride more waves than surfboards. There are numerous international competitions now in body-boarding despite the continued disdain of surfers. Whether you are just using your board to enjoy the ocean or you are preparing for competition with lots of maneuvers, you need a leash on your board to avoid losing it to the surf. Fortunately, installing a leash is a fairly simple process.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 6 inches to 8 inches down from the nose of the board in the center. Most boarders will place the leash plug here, but some will place it 6 inches from one side or the other depending upon whether they are regular or goofy-footed (goofy-footed means you naturally stand on a surfboard or skateboard with your left foot back and right forward). Try lying on the board as you would while surfing, with the leash, and figure out where it will be most comfortable.

    • 2

Do not put the leash directly in the center if your board is a stinger. One inch to one side or the other will be fine.

    • 3

Mark this spot with the pencil.

    • 4

Push the screwdriver or drill bit through the spot. Bang the screwdriver through with your hand. If using a drill, use a slow speed and drill from the bottom. Either will work better if heated first.

    • 5

Connect the male and female parts of the leash plug through the board. Make sure the plug is tight and flush with the board.

    • 6

Thread one of the two strings that extend from the plug through brass or stainless steel loop at the end of the leash.

    • 7

Pull the two strings together and loop around your finger, creating a knot.
