    Deep In the Backcountry

    • If you're an independent camper who prefers to avoid the crowds and conveniences of a traditional campground, then the Appalachian Trail is the place for you. Marshalls Creek is about 15 minutes from Delaware Water Gap, the spot where the 2,180-mile Appalachian Trail crosses from New Jersey into Pennsylvania. The trail is restricted to foot traffic only, and you can spend days, weeks or even months on the trail, hiking from one campsite to the next with only the supplies you can carry on your back. Lean-to shelters are spaced roughly every 10 to 20 miles along the trail, but in most areas you can also pitch a tent at any suitable site near the trail. Additional details and trail maps are available through the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
