How to Build Travel Trailer Leveling Ramps

Travel trailers come in a wide range of sizes and shapes. They all travel on wheels, and when parked for one or more nights at a campsite, leveling the wheels can be necessary -- and pose a real challenge. Ready-made leveling ramps are available, but the cost is often prohibitive. Homemade wooden ramps crack and splinter over time. Plastic ramps that clamp together also break apart within a few uses. One homemade solution for leveling ramps that can last for years and be relatively low-cost is a rubberized, horse barn stall mat cut into pieces.

Things You'll Need

  • 4-by-6-foot rubber horse stall mat
  • Tape measure
  • Permanent ink marker in any color but black
  • Straight edge
  • Utility knife
  • New utility knife blades

Instructions

      Lay the 4-by-6-foot rubber mat on a flat, concrete floor.

      Mark across the 4-foot width in 8-inch increments with the tape measure and permanent ink marker. This creates 6 8-inch lengths. Extend each mark the entire 6-foot length of the mat using a straight edge and marker.

      Mark across the 6-foot length of the mat with the tape measure and marker in 1-foot increments. This creates 6 12-inch lengths. Extend these marks across the width of the mat.

      Cut along all marked lines with the utility knife. There will be 36 8-inch-by-12-inch mat squares.

      Stack the mat squares under the travel trailer tires, as needed, to level the trailer.
