How to Repair a Crack in a Fiberglass Camper Door?

The fiberglass door on your camper is probably the most used item on the entire camper. Each time the door opens and closes, stress is placed on the door as pressure is applied to it. Over time and exposure to the weather, the fiberglass doors can become cracked. Rather than replacing the door with a new one, you can easily patch the door at home using a fiberglass repair kit. This should be done outside or in a well- ventilated area.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the area that has cracked by removing any loose or broken parts of the door. Use a coarse sand paper and sand around the cracked area. Wear a pair of work gloves and use care when doing this as not to get any fiberglass slivers in your hands.

    • 2

Cut a piece of fiberglass cloth from the repair kit to fit over the cracked area. Be sure to leave a one-inch perimeter of cloth around the crack.

    • 3

Apply a thin coat of fiberglass resin/hardener to the fiberglass door. Apply a coat of this mixture to the fiberglass cloth that you cut.

    • 4

Place the fiberglass cloth onto the door completely covering the cracked area.

    • 5

Apply a second coat to the cloth and door after the initial coat has had time to cure. The length of time it takes to the cure will be affected by the temperature of the area in which you are working.

    • 6

Allow the patch to cure for 24 hours. Sand the patch with a fine grit sand paper until it has the same appearance as the rest of the door. Paint the patch to match the color of your camper door.
