How to Cook in a Camper

Preparing meals on your camping trip does not mean you have to cook everything over a campfire, or run off to a local fast food outlet. With some planning and preparation, you can enjoy the same type of home-cooked meals inside your camper. While barbecuing may be your family's preferred choice of cooking on camping trips, sometimes the weather prevents you from cooking outdoors.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan your meals at home. Write down a menu for each day you are going to be away. Once the menu is selected, shop for the foods you need to take with you. Keep in mind the size of the fridge in your camper, as not to bring too much food.

    • 2

Prepare as much of the meal as possible at home. Wash and cut vegetables, potatoes and other items at home prior to your trip. Store the washed and cut items in air-tight containers. This saves you time and reduces the amount of waste you have to dispose of on your camping trip.

    • 3

Open the windows in your camper and follow the instructions to start the stove or oven precisely. When cooking with any type of gas, you want to prevent any build up inside the trailer when cooking. If your camper has a microwave, use it for items that take a long time to cook like baked potatoes. Not only does it cook them quicker, it also reduces the amount of heat being generated inside the trailer.

Place a skillet on one of the burners and place the items you are preparing inside the skillet. Add a small amount of spice and/or olive oil to the skillet to add flavor.

    • 5

Use a second skillet for meats or eggs depending on which meal is being prepared. Continue to cook until all the items are prepared correctly.

    • 6

Turn the burners off; plate and serve the food. Clean up and properly dispose of any waste, as not to attract any wildlife to your campground.
