How to Make a Tent From Plastic

A plastic tarp can be used to make one of the most basic, yet efficient primitive shelters. Tarp shelters come in various designs, most of which only require the plastic tarp and some cord. Rocks or other heavy objects are used to hold down the corners of the shelter, rather than puncturing the tarp with a tent stake. Trees provide the support structure for the tent.

      Tie a length of cord about chest height between two trees. Make sure the plastic tarp will fit over it lengthwise and that there is not more than approximately six to eight inches between the edge of the tarp and the tree.

      Pull the corners of the tarp tight and place heavy rocks on each corner to hold the tarp down.

      Lower the height of the cord and move the rocks farther from the center of the tarp if you need to keep wind out of the tent.
