1
Study the compass' parts. On a baseplate compass there's an arrow, which is divided in half. The half that is red represents the north arrow. On the outside rim of the compass face, there's a dial which you can rotate 360 degrees. On baseplate compasses, there's also an arrow imprinted on the plastic case. This is known as the direction of travel arrow.
-
2
Hold your compass parallel to the ground at about waist level. Notice the north arrow always points in the same direction, regardless of which direction you face.
-
3
Rotate the dial so the direction you want to travel aligns with the direction of travel arrow. If, for example, you want to travel northwest, rotate the dial so the point in between "N" and "W" is facing the direction of travel arrow.
-
4
Open your map and find where you are. Mark this spot, as well as your destination spot on the map. Draw a straight line between the two points. If you're unsure where you are on a map, climb to the highest point possible and find a landmark that's also on the map. Adjust your compass so your direction of travel arrow faces the landmark. For instance, if you see a lake to your east, readjust your compass so the "E" aligns with the direction of travel arrow. Align the red arrow with the "N" located on your dial, and then follow the direction of travel arrow until you reach the lake.
-
5
Set your compass on top of the map, and align its edge with the line that goes between your current spot and your destination (drawn in the previous step). Change the dial on your compass so its "N" and "S" arrows align with the north and south arrows of the map.
-
6
Remove the compass from your map and hold it parallel to the ground at waist level. Match the "N" with the north arrow.
-
7
Walk in the direction of the direction of travel arrow toward your destination. Keep the north arrow aligned with the "N" on your compass dial while following the direction of travel arrow. Continue this path until you reach your destination.
