How to Troubleshoot a Camper-Shell Lock
A camper shell is a large camper that attaches to the bed of a pickup truck and is secured via door locks. When a camper-shell lock goes on the fritz, frustrations mount. Troubleshoot and get the lock back to working order with some simple hand tools and dry lubricant. Use a dry, graphite-based lube to prevent excess gunk from developing in the tiny lock mechanisms.
Things You'll Need

- Slim-jim
- Graphite lubricant

1
Insert the key into the keyhole. Turn and try to open the lock. Listen for grinding or gritty sounds.
-
2
Slide the slim-jim between the door jamb and the lock stopper to force open the door lock.
-
3
Unscrew the lock unit on the side of the door and pull it out 1/2 to 1 inch. Squirt lubricant into the lock gears, tumblers and stopper. Push the stopper with your fingers to move the lock manually.
-
4
Insert the key into the hole and turn. If the lock still doesn't turn, squirt lube into the keyhole.
-
5
Insert the key and try turning it again. Once the lock turns, screw the unit back into the door and roll on down the highway with a functioning lock.
