Places to Canoe in Central California
-
Bass Lake
-
Canoeing on a lake gives a paddler the opportunity to put in and out at the same location. In addition, lakes have almost no current and offer great opportunities for relaxation and sport fishing. One of the most popular lakes in Central California is Bass Lake. Located in Madera County, about 20 miles south of Yosemite National Park, the lake has a free boat launch, 14 miles of shoreline and 16 different species of fish. Surrounded by the Sierra National Forrest, Bass Lake has campsites for the intrepid and resort accommodations for those who want to be pampered.
Lower American River
-
The Lower American River flows from Folsom Dam to the Sacramento River Delta. A Class I and II river offering gentle currents with few physical challenges, the Lower American is perfect for families and novice canoeists. The best place to put in is at Sunrise Boulevard near Placerville; the best take out is at River Bend or William Pond. The only set of rapids on the Lower American is the San Juan Hole, which makes up the Class II section of the run. These are mild rapids and easily navigable by first time canoeists, however.
Cache Creek
-
Cache Creek is a major river in Yolo County and a great place to see bald eagles. The creek offers two runs, both mild to moderate in their skill requirements. The Wilderness Run is a Class II and III stretch of the waterway covering 17 miles. The run is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, just north of Lake Berryessa. The Class III rapids, called Mad Mike, are at the end of the run. Canoeists wishing to avoid the rapids can portage around them. Rumsey Run, a Class II section of the creek that covers 8.5 miles, is the most popular section. While there are two sections of Class III rapids on the Rumsey Run, it is possible to portage around them.
Upper Kern River
-
Unlike most Sierra rivers that flow east to west, the Kern flows north to south and is the longest river in the Sierra Nevadas. A popular recreational river, the Kern offers every class of water, making it the perfect river for both novice and experienced canoeists. Novice canoeists should try the Powerhouse Run, which is a 2 mile section of the river. Canoeists with some experience can try the Camp 3 Run, which has several intermediate whitewater sections. Once completed, canoeists can either take out at the Powerhouse Run or continue onward.
Other Considerations
