Things You'll Need

- Rope
- Life vest

Getting In
-
1
Board the canoe while it is on calm, knee- to waist-deep water and wear a life vest. Have a friend hold the canoe steady with both hands and positioned parallel with the dock or shoreline.
-
2
Keep balanced, sure-footed and low to the ground. Putting your weight lower will help prevent the canoe from rocking back and forth.
-
3
Place a hand on the edge of the canoe to get a feel for its moment. As you step into the canoe, one foot after the other, put your other hand on the opposite edge for balance. Do not step on the seats.
-
4
If you need to turn around to sit, maintain a low, squatted position as you let go of the canoe edge with one hand at a time. Turn around, re-grip the edges and sit down.
Getting Out
-
5
Clear any paddles and gear so that they do not become obstacles when you exit the canoe. Again, the canoe should be parallel with the dock or shoreline and in knee- to waist-deep water.
-
6
While one person exits, the sitting passenger can hold the dock or use a paddle as an anchor to help steady the canoe.
-
7
Place both hands on the edges of the canoe and stand slightly, keeping your weight low.
-
8
Step towards the edge. If there is something sturdy on the ground, such as a post or another person, grab it for balance.
-
9
Place one foot out of the canoe and set it down before stepping all the way out.
