How to Clean Aluminum Canoes

Canoes are small boats that are mainly in rivers and lakes. Aluminum canoes are usually man powered via two paddles. Aluminum is a popular material used in making canoes. Aluminum is ideal for the hull of a canoe because it is lightweight and durable. However, with use, river dirt and slime will build up on the side of the canoe. This can cause the metal to deteriorate and affect the overall performance of the canoe. Instructions

    • 1

Turn the aluminum canoe over, with the help of a friend or two. Cleaning the bottom as well as the sides will give the canoe a longer life span.

    • 2

Hose the canoe down. Removing any algae or lake slime with the hose will assist in an easier cleanup. Concentrate on the bottom as well as the sides to get rid of any loose debris.

    • 3

Pour a capfull of the aluminum boat cleaner on your rag or spray directly onto the canoe, depending on the product. Some items may be a paste; in this case dip your cloth in and use approximately a dime-size amount.

    • 4

Wipe the aluminum canoe with the rag. Spread the cleaner over the entire canoe to saturate it. Repeat Step 2 if more cleaner is necessary.

    • 5

Scrub the aluminum canoe with the soft bristle brush. This will remove any oxidation and green algae. Continue to scrub until the canoe appears clean.

    • 6

Rinse the aluminum canoe with the hose. Remove the cleaner. If the canoe still appears dirty, repeat Steps 3 to 5. Then, rinse again.

    • 7

Turn the aluminum canoe back over.
