How to Pole a Canoe
Instructions
-
-
1
Disembark on a calm body of water, such as a small pond or lake, on a day when there isn't a whole lot of wind.
-
2
Stand in the center of the canoe and keep your head over the center of the canoe to ensure the best balance. You will need to use your legs as shock absorbers as you pole, so brace your feet against either side of the canoe and practice standing for a few minutes.
-
3
Pick up your pole and lower it into the water until it touches the bottom. Grip the center of the pole with both hands and push down, lowering your weight as if you were sitting in a chair. Remember, your knees are the shock absorbers in the process and will help you keep your balance and propel you through the water.
-
4
Make a J-stroke to keep the canoe's path straight. This will take some practice and will help you cope with unexpected currents on a moving stream.
-
5
Lift the pole up vertically and place it on the other side of the canoe and repeat the process of pushing down while lowering your center of gravity as if you were sitting on a chair, ending with a J-stroke.
