DIY A-Frame Canoe Racks

If you're a canoeing or kayaking enthusiast, chances are you'll start to amass a collection of boats for all occasions. As you purchase, or even build, more canoes, you'll need a rack to store them all. Fortunately, it's easy to build your own in one afternoon. For a simple but effective A-frame canoe rack, all you need is some lumber and some simple tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two 2-by-4 studs end to end and attach them with a door hinge. Repeat with the other pair of 2-by-4 studs. Turn the hinges down, lift the legs from the center and stand the legs up so the frame forms a letter "A."

    • 2

Drill a half-inch hole in the legs of each support, near the hinge. Drill a matching half-inch hole into one of the 10-foot long 2-by-4 planks. Bolt the plank between the two A-frames. Repeat the drilling procedure with the other two 10-foot planks and attach them parallel to each other, about 2 to 3 feet above the bottom of the frame.

    • 3

Attach the two 6-foot planks across the A-frame, on top of and perpendicular to the lower lengthwise supports. Attach half-inch screw-in eye bolts to each end of the 6-foot planks. Attach another pair of eye bolts to the ends of the 10-foot plank at the top of the frame. These bolts will allow you to strap down the canoes with bungee cords later on.
