1
Look around your surroundings for several strong anchor points. These include trees, climbing hangers and large boulders.
-
2
Determine the strength of the anchor points by examining their condition and pulling and pushing on them. Trees should be alive, well-rooted and have a thick trunk. Boulders need to be very large, unmovable and able to have a strap wrapped around them without it slipping off. Climbing hangers should have no cracks in them, be tightly bolted to the rock and look in good condition.
-
3
Choose two of the best anchors that are close to one another. You can use three anchors if you feel it is necessary for safety.
-
4
Wrap the slings around the anchor points in a way that assures they don't slip off. For trees, wrap the slings as close to the base of the trunk as possible. For rocks, you need to determine the best path around the rock that's closest to its bottom while assuring the strap stays in place. To attach the strap to a climbing hanger, fasten a locking carabiner to the hanger and insert the strap inside the carabiner. Lock the carabiner by turning its locking mechanism clockwise until it's tight.
-
5
Run the slings together to the location you want to secure the rope. The slings should all be snug in this location to evenly balance the load between them.
-
6
Lay the slings together and tie a knot, using all of them together, about 12 inches from their ends.
-
7
Insert a single locking carabiner through the end of each of the slings. Insert a second locking carabiner through the end of each sling, facing the opposite direction than the first carabiner. This keeps the locking mechanism for each carabiner away from one another.
-
8
Insert the climbing rope into each of the carabiners, at the end of the slings, and secure them by tightening the locking mechanisms with your hands.
-
9
Double-check each anchor point and carabiner to ensure everything is secured properly.
