How to Mount a Rock Climbing Hanging Board

A climbing hanging board is a specialized hold used in indoor climbing gyms or home climbing walls. As the name suggests, the hanging board is used for prolonged holds, strengthening you forearms, fingers and wrists while hanging. These devices require heavy bolts and glue for mounting as they are exposed to repeated weight and tension. Install one properly in your home climbing gym or wall and use it to gain strength for your climbs. Do not install these on regular household walls as they do not have the strength to support the weight. Always mount to a climbing wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the location on your climbing wall where you want to place the hanging board. Use a pencil to mark the mounting holes and make sure you have access to the backside of the wall when placing the hanging board.

    • 2

Drill out the marked holes on the wall, using a bit the same size as the bolts included with the hanging board. Typical sizes include 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch bolts.

    • 3

Apply epoxy to the back of the hanging board. Align it to the drilled holes and screw the bolts through the mounting board and drilled wall holes.

    • 4

Go to the back of the wall and hand screw the T-nuts over the threads on the bolts. Tighten them as firmly as you can, then return to the front and drill the bolts as tight as possible with the power drill and the appropriate sized socket (again, 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch, depending on your mounting gear).

    • 5

Go back to the rear of the wall and check that the T-nuts are grooved into the wall, securing the hanging board as tight as possible.
