How to Hook Up a Harness for Climbing

Whether climbing indoors or out, it is essential that a climbing harness and rope be properly attached for maximum safety and comfort. While one person can secure a harness and rope by himself, it is helpful to have another pair of eyes double-check each knot and buckle to confirm a correct fit. Knowing that your harness is secure will give you peace of mind and make your climbing experience more enjoyable.

Instructions

Hold the harness with the leg loops hanging down and the buckles facing front. Step into the leg loops of the harness. Slide the webbing through the slider buckle to tighten the loops around your thighs.

    • 2

Start behind your back and wrap the loose webbing straps tightly around your waist. Slide the end of the strap through the main buckle.

    • 3

Slide the strap that holds up the leg loop through the waist loops. Buckle the strap on the opposite leg, and tuck it in to keep it from hanging down.

    • 4

Tie a figure-eight knot in your climbing rope approximately 3 feet from the end of the rope. Slide the longer end of the rope through the crotch and waist loops on the harness and back through the figure-eight knot on the rope, beginning at the end nearest the harness.

Tie the remaining tail end of the rope off to the end of the main rope with several overhand knots.
