1
Lay out the rope on a long driveway or field. Find the halfway mark; if you know the length of the rope, divide by two and find the middle by measuring from one end. If you don't have the length, measure the full rope and divide by two.
-
2
Wrap a piece of tape around the middle. Use this as your reference point.
-
3
Thread a small needle with fine nylon thread. Use a bright orange thread or a thread with a color that contrasts with the color of the rope.
-
4
Remove the tape and push the needle through the sheath surrounding the kernmantle interior threads. The needle will not compromise the integrity of the rope. Pull the thread through the center of the rope.
-
5
Pinch the end of the thread at the point where the needle went through. Take the other end of the nylon thread and make tight coils around the rope, moving down until 1 inch of the rope is wrapped in the nylon coils.
-
6
Cut the needle off the thread and pull up 10 to 12 coils. Push the end of the thread through the lifted wraps then pull tight on the end to tighten the coils back around the rope and secure the end of the nylon thread to the rope.
