1
Select a location for your climbing rope. If your climbing rope is outdoors, choose a sturdy tree with a branch that can hold approximately 250 pounds. Indoors, the rope should be attached to a metal structure that can bear the weight of a 250-pound adult. The height of the structure or tree branch may be between 12 and 15 feet for children.
-
2
Tie or install knots on your rope at 12-to-18-inch intervals. The knots will help climbers by providing them with a grip for their arms and legs.
-
3
Securely attach the rope to the apparatus or tree. The rope should hang straight to the ground. Have an adult test the strength of the rope, the security of the attachment and the apparatus it is attached to.
-
4
Sweep the location of debris and any other sharp objects. Clear a diameter of at least 5 feet around the bottom of the rope. Preferably, the ground around the rope should be of softer material, like grass, dirt, rubber or sand, rather than concrete.
-
5
Place a landing mat at the base of the climbing mat for protection. Keep it there for all climbs.
