DIY: Webbing, Slings & Quickdraws

Slings, also called runners or sewn runners, are pieces of nylon webbing or other materials used in rock climbing. A quickdraw consists of a sling and two carabiners, and is used to connect a piece of protection placed in the rock face to the climber's rope to protect him in the event of a fall. Pre-made quickdraws are available commercially, but homemade quickdraws using sewn runners are simple and easy to make.

Instructions

    • 1

Twist and fold the sewn runner or nylon webbing sling so you have a doubled, 12-inch loop of webbing.

    • 2

Clip a carabiner through one end of the doubled loop of webbing. Turn the carabiner so the top points up and away from the webbing.

    • 3

Clip the remaining carabiner through the opposite end of the doubled loop of webbing. Clip this carabiner into the webbing in the opposite direction as you clipped the first carabiner, and turn it so the top of the second carabiner points down and away from the webbing. The gate of the second, or bottom, carabiner should face the opposite direction as the first, or top, carabiner.
