How to Throw a Rope

Throwing a rope accurately is a skill many people may never consider important, until the need arises during an outing or in an emergency. Learning to throw a rope accurately does not require a lot of physical prowess, but the technique does take a little practice. Methods of throwing a rope involve coiling the rope and using the weight of the coil to produce enough momentum to carry the rope.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie the end of the rope to your wrist, waist or a stationary object, such as a tree, so the rope will not be lost when thrown.

    • 2

Make two even butterfly coils comprising the entire length of rope. Leave a 3-foot section of rope between the two coils. Feed the rope through the open palm of your dominant hand with your non-dominant hand doubling the rope back-and-forth on itself in even loops. Allow the loops in the rope to hang down over opposites sides of the palm on your dominate hand to resemble the wings of a butterfly.

    • 3

Hold the coil on the side of the rope with the tied-off end -- the end of the rope secured to your waist, wrist or a tree -- in your non-dominant hand. Hold the coil on the side of the rope with the loose end in your throwing hand. Allow the 3-foot section of rope between the two coils to hang loosely between your arms.

    • 4

Hold the coil in your non-dominant hand at your waist with your palm facing upward. Throw the coil of rope in your dominant hand with an overhand motion similar to a quarterback throwing a football. Watch the 3-foot section of rope between the coils.

    • 5

Toss the coil in your non-dominant hand just as the rope begins to tighten. Do not wait for the rope to become taut or the first section of rope will lack the momentum to pull the second coil to the target.

    • 6

Compensate for the wind, if necessary. Angle your throw into the wind and allow the wind to blow the rope to the target.
