Which Climbing Gear Items Are Most Important?
-
The Harness
-
A properly fitted harness is something every climber needs. Harnesses vary greatly; some have adjustable leg loops so they can be used with multiple layers, some are designed for women, some have more padding for all-day climbs and some are ultra-light.
Belay Device
-
The most common belay device is a tube device. There are many trade names, but they all function similarly. The belay device is connected to a locking carabiner and clipped to the belay loop of the harness.
Shoes
-
Properly fitted climbing shoes greatly enhance the enjoyment of rock climbing. Shoes have a sticky rubber sole. Some shoes are designed with stiffer soles for crack routes and edge climbs, while climbers pursuing face climbs often prefer softer-soled shoes or slippers. Climbers size shoes on average one to two sizes smaller than street shoe size.
Helmet
-
A helmet, while not mandatory, can greatly enhance safety.
Ropes
-
Climbing ropes are available in multiple diameters and lengths; 50 meters in length is common, but 60 meters has become the preferred length in recent years.
